Calder's first New York City exhibition was in 1928, and other exhibitions in Paris and Berlin gained him international recognition as a significant artist. Calder was prolific and worked throughout his career in many art forms. He produced drawings, oil paintings, watercolors, etchings, gouache and serigraphy. He also designed jewelry, tapestry, theatre settings and architectural interiors. Calder died in 1976.

Han anslĂ¶t sig sĂ„ smĂ„ningom till gruppen Abstraction-Creation och skapade dĂ€r sina fĂ¶rsta abstrakta figurer, vilka Arp kallade stabiles och de Ă„tfĂ¶ljdes snart av mobiler, motordrivna eller endast "luftdrivna". Det var i Paris som Calder tillverkade sina "mini-cirkusar" med rĂ¶rliga figurer i stĂ„ltrĂ„d och trĂ€.
Under andra vĂ€rldskriget, fĂ¶rsĂ¶kte Calder bli marinsoldat, men blev inte antagen. IstĂ€llet fortsatte han skulptera, men brist pĂ„ metall fick honom att bĂ¶rja producera konstverk i trĂ€. Efter kriget hade Calder flera stora retrospektiva utstĂ€llningar, bland annat en pĂ„ Museum of Moder Art i New York 1943.
Omkring 1970 finner vi att Alexander Calder ocksĂ„ avbildar rĂ¶relsen i gouachemĂ„lningar av relativt stort format och Ă€ven i grafiska verk. PlĂ¶tsligt Ă€r ocksĂ„ illusionen kinetisk, rĂ¶relsen framgĂ„r tydligt, utan vind, utan motor.
