Minas Avetisyan was an Armenian painter known for his historical paintings, particularly of monuments in his home country. His work is characterized by bold use of color in a style reminiscent of the Fauve painters. Avetisyan studied at Repin Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture in Leningrad (now St Petersburg), and then returned to Armenia. It was his participation in the “Exhibition of Five” in Yerevan in 1962 that exposed his work to a wider audience. A museum dedicated to Avetisyan’s work was established in his hometown of Djadjur, but was later leveled in an earthquake.
