Alberto Dutary studied painting at the School of Fine Arts in Panama between 1950 and 1952, and later in the Academia de San Fernando in Madrid between 1953 and 1955, where he learned to use informal painting techniques. Returning to Panama created compositions with floating figures and ghostly, which he named "saints." Towards the decade of 1970 leaves that issue to advance into the surreal . He was also professor of painting at several cultural institutions like the YMCA and YMHA of the Panama Canal Zone (1962-1964), Institute Albert Einstein (1970-1973), the University of Panama and associate professor of art history at the City University of New York . In 1962 he was one of the founders of the Panamanian Institute of Art.
