Warshawsky studied at the National Academy of Design. Most of his early career was spent in Paris, France; however, by 1934 he was a resident of Los Angeles. He was the brother of the artist Abel G. Warshawksy. Legend has it that by mid-carreer their works were so similar to the public's eye that Alexander began to sign his work "Xander" in order to differentiate between the two, this example predating that time. His work includes portraits, interiors, and still life.
