Havell was born on 8 March, 1855 at 41 Sloane Square, London. He was the son of Edmund Havell junior and a member of Havell family of painters who originated from Reading. Havell worked for many years for Mr George Poole Fores, in the studio over the Fores Shop in Piccadilly, producing many illustrations for Fores' books. He painted racehorse portraits of which a large number were engraved. Several sets of hunting prints were also produced after his work.

Havell died on 13 March 1928 of pneumonia.
