Arvid Nilsson studerade vid Zahrtmanns skola i Köpenhamn, vid Konstnärsförbundets skola i Stockholm. Företog resor till Frankrike och Italien. Han tillhörde konstnärsgruppen, De unga. Han målar idyliska landskaps- och gatumotiv i en naturalistisk impressionistisk stil, stilleben och enstaka porträtt och figurmotiv.
Separat framträdde han i Stockholm på Konstnärshuset 1917, Gummesons konsthall 1919, Konstnärshuset 1925, Gummesons konsthall 1937 och 1939, Konstsalong Rålambshof 1952, en retrospektiv utställning av oljemålningar och 1953, en retrospektiv utställning av akvareller och teckningar. Under sin tid i Paris deltog han i Höstsalongerna 1921, 1928 och 1931.
