From 1986 to 1989 Damien Hirst attended a course in liberal art at Goldsmiths College in London, because it did not focus on a single art genre but covered all genres. In 1988 Damien Hirst became famous with the exhibition \'Freeze\', for which he and other young British artists presented their works in an empty storage hall in London\'s docklands. This exhibition was also the beginning of Damien Hirst\'s constant support by the art collector and advertising tycoon Charles Saatchi, who has since regularly shown Hirst\'s work in his exhibition \'Young British Artists\'. In 1990 Hirst held his first own exhibition entitled \'In and Out of Love\' at the Woodstock Street Gallery in London. Exhibitions at the Institute of Contemporary Art (London) and the Emmanuel Perrotin Gallery in Paris followed that same year. In 1992 Damien Hirst was nominated for the renowned Turner Prize for a piece of art showing a 14 foot tiger shark in a Basin filled with formaldehyde. Further formaldehyde installations followed in 1994. \'Away from the Flock\', a sheep in a water tank filled with formaldehyde, caused public outcry and was even covered with black ink by an angry visitor. The controversy surrounding the British artist reached its peak, when Damien Hirst received the Turner Prize for his animal installations in 1994. In the following years, Hirst showed further animal installations, which achieved top prices on the art market. In 1996 Hirst\'s first short film \'Hanging around\' came out, he opened a restaurant and produced pop songs. In 1996, aged 33, Damien Hirst published his autobiography. In 2000 a spectacular exhibition featuring Hirst\'s works was opened in New York. Over the past few years, Damien Hirst\'s main focus has been on photo realistic painting.

Damien Hirst est un artiste anglais né en 1965. Diplomé du Goldsmiths College de Londres en 1989 il reçoit le Turner Price en 1995. Il est un des leaders du groupe des « Young British Artists », mouvement artistique connu pour ses œuvres provocantes. Damien Hirst est un artiste éclectique. Il peint, sculpte, travaille sur des impressions et sur des installations. Ces multiples media lui permettent d’explorer les relations entre L’art, la vie et la mort. La mort revient de façon quasi obsessionnelle dans son travail. Elle peut être choquante et prendre la forme d’une tête de vache rongée par les mouches (A Thousand Year), d’un requin conservé dans du formol (The physical impossibility of death in the mind of someone living), d’un cabinet de pharmacie (Medicine Cabinet). Mais elle peut être aussi poétique et prendre l’apparence d’un crâne humain incrusté de diamants (For the Love of God) ou d’une vanité envahie par un chaos de couleurs (Beautiful Hours Painting). D’autres de ses oeuvres, par leurs couleurs (et leur pureté) contrastent. Il en va ainsi des Butterfly paintings, toiles parsemées de papillons, qui rappellent la fragilité et la beauté de la vie, ou des diamond cabinets. La joie, l’énergie et la couleur se retrouvent dans deux autres de ses séries. Les spot paintings, ses tableaux les plus célèbres, sont des alignements de points de couleurs différentes dont le diamètre est égal à la distance qui les sépare. Ces œuvres sont pour l’artiste « une façon de définir exactement la joie des couleurs ». Les Spin Paintings sont des peintures crées à partir d’une machine qui utilise la force centrifuge. De la peinture de couleur est versée sur un support en rotation. Le résultat est hypnotisant : toutes les couleurs se mélangent et forment une explosion psychédélique. Damien Hirst, par son talent et son originalité bénéficie d’une renommée internationale. Son travail est exposé dans de nombreuses galeries ainsi que dans des musées à travers le monde. En 2008, il fait scandale en vendant aux enchères 233 de ses œuvres pour un montant total de 140 millions d’euros.
