Emmanuel Ekong Ekefrey - born in 1952 in Niiya Ibom State, Nigeria. A self-trained artist from the Ibibio people in south east Nigeria. He first draws his figures on the canvas, then he paints them, using industrial pigments.
The Ibibio people have their own music, dance and language and Ekefrey’s paintings reflect their life as well as that of the gigantic Lagos metropolis. He paints urban masquerades, and scenes from everyday life at the crossroad of different human destinies. His works are a tangle of form, figure and colors. Ekefrey has exhibited in many European art centers. Some of the exhibits in which his work was seen include his show in Alliance Franchise, Nimbus Gallery, Signature Gallery, Goethe Institut, Lagos, ELF Port-Harcourt and Venetian Gallery Madrid, Spain. He received the Best Overall Award at the Nigerian Artist Award (1989).
