A leading American Scene watercolorist from Ohio, he was a native of Cleveland who enrolled in the Cleveland School of Art in 1906 and studied with Henry Keller. From about 1910 to 1916, he painted outdoors with Keller at Berlin Heights and experimented with Impressionism. However, several years later, he developed his signature style which was American Scene or regionalist genre in a transparent watercolor technique. Many of his etchings consisted of Cleveland scenes, this being a rare example.
