Ami et homologue de Jean-François Millet, Georges Paul François Laurent Laugée est un peintre réaliste français né en 1853 et décédé en 1937. Originaire de Seine-Maritime, il est formé dans l’atelier de son père Désiré François Laugée, puis auprès d’Isidore Pils à l’Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Paris. Il expose pour la première fois à l’âge de vingt-quatre ans, au Salon de Paris ; il continuera d’y présenter régulièrement des œuvres, et en deviendra même membre du jury de 1908 à 1910. Primé aux Expositions Universelles de 1899 et de 1900 (pour laquelle il reçoit une médaille d’argent), il s’inscrit dans la veine réaliste de son temps : Georges Laugée est ainsi célèbre pour ses paysannes et scènes de campagne pittoresques.
