Hans Viksten studerade vid Signe Barths målarskola i Stockholm och vid Gerlesborgsskolan i Stockholm och vid Konstakademien i Stockholm för Evert Lundquist och Lennart Rodhe. 1976 utnämndes han till professor i måleri vid Konsthögskolan i Stockholm där han vid den tiden fortfarande var verksam.
Han har haft ett 70-tal separatutställningar i Sverige och utomlands sedan debuten 1964 på Galleri Burén. Han har också deltagit i ett 100-tal samlingsutställningar.
Offentlig utsmyckning:
Televerket och Sveriges Radios musikhus Berwaldhallen, Stockholm 1979, samt för IBM:s kursgård på Lidingö. Vidare har han gjort ett multitryck för ITT i New York.
