Henrik Ankarcrona traveled to Paris and from there to Algeria where he joined the French army. During his stay in North Africa, he found justification for his paintings and painted many African landscapes, often with caravans in the desert and disputes between Arabs and Frenchmen. He has also painted several Swedish motifs, usually from Dalarna nature and folklore. He has also visited Italy and painted genre motifs from there. Member of the Academy of Fine Arts 1865.

Henrik Ankarcrona reste till Paris och vidare till Algeriet där han tog tjänst i franska armén. Under sin vistelse i norra Afrika han fann motiv för sina tavlor och målade många afrikanska landskap, ofta med karavaner i öknen och dispyter mellan araber och fransmän. Han har vidare målat flera Svenska motiv, oftast från Dalarnas natur och folkliv. Han har även besökt Italien och målat genremotiv därifrån. Ledamot vid Akademien för de fria konsterna 1865.
