Hugues Taraval var son till Guillaume Taraval. Han fick sin första konstnärliga utbildning hos fadern Guillaume Thomas Raphaël Taraval, då han undervisade vid Kungl. Ritarakademien på Stockholms slott. Fadern hade inkallats till slottbygget av Carl Hårleman 1732 och flyttade till Stockholm med sin hustru Marie-Anne François och den då blott treårige Jean Hugues, sju år senare föddes den andre sonen arkitekten Louis Gustave. Hugues fungerade som medarbetare till faderns dekorationsarbeten och stannade med sin bror i Sverige fram till sin fars död 1750. Åter i Paris antogs han som elev vid konstakademien och blev 1778 professor vid densamma, redan 1775 hade Konstakamien i Stockholm kallat honom som medlem. Han målade i klara färger, samt ytterst korrekt en del stafflitavlor med mytologiska motiv.
