James Edward Allen studied at the Art Academy, Chicago, the Art Students League and the Hans Hoffman School, New York City. He studied with Joseph Pennell, Robert Brackman, Robert Philipp, William Auerbach-Levy and Arshile Gorky. His printmaking seems to have focused between the 1930's-40's. Member of the Salmagundi Club, the New Rochelle Art Association, the Society of Etchers in New York, the Chicago Society of Etchers, the Society of Illustrators, New York, and the Philadelphia Society of Etchers. Works are held in the Cleveland Museum of Art, Brooklyn Museum, Cincinnati Museum, Seattle Art Museum, Philadelphia Museum, and the Library of Congress.

James Edward Allen 'James E. Allen': An important American printmaker, painter and illustrator, James Edward Allen studied art techniques at the Art Academy, Chicago, the Art Students League and the Hans Hoffman School, New York City. His instructors included Joseph Pennell, Robert Brackman, Robert Philipp, William Auerbach-Levy and Arshile Gorky. Allen began his career as an illustrator in 1913 and during the following years he was commissioned by many major magazines such as, The Saturday Evening Post. Most of his original lithographs and etchings were created during the 1930's - 1940's.
James E. Allen was a full member of the Salmagundi Club, the New Rochelle Art Association, the Society of Etchers in New York, the Chicago Society of Etchers, the Society of Illustrators, New York, and the Philadelphia Society of Etchers. Today his art is represented in such collections as the Brooklyn Museum, the Cincinnati Museum, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Seattle Art Museum, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Library of Congress.
