Johan Ludvig Runberg var Finlands nationalskald redan så tidigt som 1851. I början av sin tid i Helsingfors bodde Runeberg i en trerumslägenhet på Stora Robertsgatan 17. Han bodde tillsammans med Fredrik Cygnaeus och skrev bl.a. Bonden Paavo här. På hösten 1829 bodde han på Kaserngatan och arbetade med sin första diktsamling. 1830 dog Fredrikas svåger, Fredrik Tengström, och Runeberg hyrde en bostad av änkan Tengström. Han och Fredrika Runeberg flyttade till Borgå i maj 1837. År 1842 fick han jobb i Borgågymnasium som lektor i grekiska litteraturen. Samma år flyttade de till sitt nya hem vid Alexandersgatan 3. Där bodde de resten av sitt liv.
