Landscape painter Joseph Vincent Nicholas Francis Weiss was born in Paris in the year 1859, the son of John Frederick Francis Weiss and Sylvie Marie Josephine Talbot. In the late 19th century he set up to paint at Houghton House in Arundel, Sussex. He became a citizen of Britain in 1899 and painted in the region for the rest of his career. His style was in the tradition of the Barbizon painters with the Sussex countryside as his subject, popular in Europe and the United States. His work is represented in the National Gallery of Canada, in Winnipeg, Chicago, St Louis, Buenos Aires, Johannesburg, Dublin. Falmouth Art Gallery, Southampton Art Gallery, Kirklees Museum, Laing Art Gallery, City of London Corporation, Atkinson Art Collection, Museums Sheffield, Usher Gallery in Lincolnshire, Bradford and Worthing.
