Kara Walker
Born in California in 1969, Walker received her undergraduate from Atlanta College of Art in 1991 and an MFA from RISD in 1994. In 1997, at the age of 27, Walker received the Macarthur Grant, the second youngest recipient. Issues of race, gender, and sexuality primarily influence her artwork. She uses graphic and often violent imagery to comment upon American slavery and racism. Her signature technique is the usage of black cut-out silhouettes against a white background. Walker is currently on the faculty of Columbia University and recently exhibited her first sculpture in May of 2014.
