Karl Theodor von Piloty was born in Munich on 1 October 1826. The artist was taught by his father Ferdinand Piloty (1786-1844). After his education Piloty went to the Munich Academy to Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld. He worked as a professor at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts after 1856. The artist gave classes for students like Franz von Lenbach, Franz Defregger, Rudolf Epp and Hans Makart who should later become famous artists. Piloty died in Ambach am Starnberger See on 21 July 1886.
