Robert Russ war ein Schüler des Landschaftsmalers Albert Zimmermann, der inspiriert von der Schule von Barbizon, seine Schüler anhielt, Studien in der freien Natur zu malen. Unter diesem Einfluss unternahm der Künstler zahlreiche Reisen in die Wachau, nach Holland, Deutschland und Italien, hier zog es ihn vor allem in das Trentino, Venedig, Assisi und Rom, wo er seine bevorzugten Motive fand. Sein Haupziel wurde aber Südtirol, wo er ab Mitte der 1870er Jahre die Sommermonate verbrachte. Bis zur Mitte der 1880er Jahre fand er seine Bildthemen in der Gegend um Bozen und Meran, später um Arco und Riva am Gardasee.

Robert Russ was a pupil of the landscape painter Albert Zimmermann, inspired by the Barbizon school, his students continued to paint studies in the wild. Under this influence, the artist made numerous trips to the Wachau, to Holland, Germany and Italy, where he moved mainly in the Trentino, Venice, Assisi and Rome, where he found his favorite motifs. His main objective of was but South Tyrol, where he spent the summer months in the mid-1870s. Until the mid-1880s, he found his pictorial themes in the area to Bolzano and Merano, later to Arco and Riva del Garda.
