Sandy SKOGLUND

Sandy Skoglund was born in Weymouth, Massachusetts in 1946. Skoglund studied studio art and art history at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts from 1964-68. She went on to graduate school at the University of Iowa in 1969 where she studied filmmaking, intaglio printmaking, and multimedia art, receiving her M.A. in 1971 and her M.F.A. in painting in 1972.
Skoglund moved to New York City in 1972, where she started working as a conceptual artist, dealing with repetitive, process-oriented art production through the techniques of mark-making and photocopying. In the late seventies Skoglund’s desire to document conceptual ideas led her to teach herself photography. This developing interest in photographic technique became fused with her interest in popular culture and commercial picture making strategies, resulting in the directorial tableau work she is known for today. Skoglund currently lives in Jersey City, New Jersey.

Sandy Skoglund har hittills i stor utsträckning varit en doldis för den svenska konstpubliken. Uppvuxen och bosatt i USA skvallrar det svenskklingande efternamnet dock om hennes ursprung, båda föräldrarna är svenska. Under de senaste årtiondena har Skoglund varit en av de stora pionjärerna inom utvecklingen av den moderna fotokonsten, tillsammans med andra amerikanska konstnärer som exempelvis Cindy Sherman och David LaChapelle. Efter utbildningen arbetade hon under ett par år konceptuellt men har sedan koncentrerat sig till sina installationer och fotografier. Långt innan de datamanipulerade, retuscherade och photoshoppade bilderna började användas inledde Skoglund sina fotografiska experiment med iscensatta scener. Hon bygger bokstavligt talat sin bildvärld, i många fall en otroligt lång och tidskrävande process där hon skapar sina rumsliga interiörer, dess invånare och attribut med egna händer. Resultatet: en scenografi med artificiella inslag vilka hon sedan fotograferar med hjälp av en storformatskamera.
Skoglunds drömska bildvärld fascinerar, de färgstarka scenernas utstuderade planering och utförande förnimmer om surrealismen. I bilderna finner vi ofta djuren i en mänsklig interiör, som ett slags andeväsen i en annars ordinär miljö, korrelationen naturen-djuren-människan ifrågasätts. Skoglund har under många år etablerat sin starka position i USA, hennes verk har ställts ut på en mängd framstående gallerier och institutioner och hon finns representerad i många prestigefulla samlingar, bland annat Museum of Modern Art och Whitney Museum i New York.
2010 har varit året då Skoglunds konstnärskap presenterats för den svenska publiken med två utställningar, först på Mjellby konstmuseum och nu senast på nyöppnade Fotografiska i Stockholm.
