Waldemar Sjölander studerade på Slöjdföreningens skola, samt på Valand i Göteborg för Tor Bjurström. Han företog studieresor till Tyskland, Frankrike, Belgien och Holland. Hans arbeten var expressiva och koloristiska. Han var bosatt i Mexico City från 1946.
