Agnes Cowieson was a sympathetic painter of animals, figures, interiors and landscapes in oil and watercolour. Though living in Edinburgh for most of her life, Cowieson travelled to Java, Malaya and South Africa in the mid 1880’s. Many of her watercolours were illustrations of interiors but also figures on beaches - a favourite place was Portobello sands. In 1897, she exhibited 73 works at the RSA. In addition, Cowieson exhibited eight works at the RA including ‘Kaffir Women Washing, Kimberley’ in 1900.
