Van, as he was called and now fondly remembered, established himself as a highly regarded artist through his painting and sculpture work. The large stainless steel sculpture at Cleveland Hopkins Airport, titled "Global Flight", is one of Van’s best known public works. A remarkable artist and Agnes Gund Scholar, Van was celebrated throughout his long career. His awards and scholarships include the Edwin Austin Abby Memorial Scholarship for Mural Painting, the 21st National Midyear Show: First Prize 1956 from The Butler Institute of American Art, Prix de Rome National Competition Bronze Medal 1947. His early formal education began at the Cleveland School of Art, 1939-41, Cranbrook Academy of Art, 1941-1942, Western Reserve University and Cleveland Institute, 1942-1945 and then his MFA at Yale University of Fine Art, 1945-47. Van taught at the Cleveland School of Art in 1948-1949; then at the Cleveland Institute of Art, retiring Professor Emeritus in 1989. He was an assistant professor from 1949-1952 at the University of Denver School of Art and was the director at the Flint Institute of Arts from 1952 through 1957.
