Ernst Lundstrom studied at the Royal Academy of Art 1877-79 and at Edward Perseus free painting school in Stockholm. This was followed by studies abroad in Germany, Belgium, France and Italy to France in 1882 and 1885. Lundstrom belonged opponent generation light shapes and actively participated in the battles against the Academy. For several years he was also a member of the Artists Association on whose board he served for a period. During their studies abroad in France (including the Grez and Normandy) and Venice, he devoted an elegant open-air technologies. Later on he settled in Stockholm and then, after his marriage to Countess Matilda Rudenschöld, in Engelberg where Lundstrom mainly worked as craftsmen and skilled ebenist

Under flera år var han även medlem av Konstnärsförbundet inom vars styrelse han tjänstgjorde under en period. Under sina utlandsstudier i Frankrike (bl. a. Grez och Normandie) och Venedig tillägnade han sig en elegant friluftsteknik. Sedemera bosatte han sig i Stockholm samt därefter, efter giftermålet med grevinnan Mathilda Rudenschöld, i Engelsberg där Lundström framförallt var verksam som konsthantverkare och skicklig ebenist
