Folke Öström studerade på Valand i Göteborg, hos Carl Wilhelmsson i Stockholm. Han företog resor till Frankrike, Spanien och Italien. Han målade mest framgångsrikt i gouache men föredrog även akvarell och temera. Motiven bestod av landskap, miljöer och människor men också figurkompositioner och mariner. Många av motiven är hämtade från Frankrike och Spanien.
