Mordt var Christianiagutt og gikk i lære her og i København. Han gikk i flere år i lære hos malermester Saabye og Ferdinand Gjøs i den danske hovedstaden. I perioden 1846-48 stilte han ut til sammen syv bilder på Charlottenborg. Av disse hadde tre av dem norske motiver fra Lifjell, Gausta og Tinnsjø i Telemark. Mordt kom trolig i kontakt med Hans F. Gude da han kom hjem i 1848, noe mange av hans malerier bærer preg av.
