Josef Wilhelm WALLANDER
1821–1888, Sweden

Signature proven counterfeit
Oil on canvas, 73x92 cm, signed JW Wallander 1887. The original is in the National Museum in Sweden. Examination with ultraviolet light shows no change in the painting. In the right bottom corner there are some scratches or damage adjacent to the signature. By examining with a microscope, very small paint fragment observed, which indicates that something is scraped away. It must have been something very short possibly cop. under the signature. The painting has been signed afterwards. The District Court's assessment: The painting gives the impression of being a work of Wallander and is therefore a forgery.
