Josef Scharl biography:
Josef Scharl was born in Munich and received his first artistic training in decoration painting at the ‘Münchener Malerschule’ in 1910. WWI forced him to become a soldier in 1915, so that his artistic training could only continue later, when he attended the Art Academy in Munich, where he studied under Heinrich von Zügel and Angelo Jank. He was a member of the Munich Secession from 1925 to 1928. A scholarship enabled him spend some time in Paris, where he was introduced to late Impressionist art. His first solo exhibition was held at Galerie Neumann-Nierendorf in 1933. Two years later, however, his works were included at the exhibition ‘Entartete Kunst’ in Nuremberg. Partly reinforced by these developments, he finally emigrated in the US in 1938. Due to this early emigration, Scharl is still less known in Germany, today. Works by Josef Scharl are however important positions in early 20th century’s art and therefore included in collections such as the Lenbachhaus and the Pinakothek in Munich and the German Academy in Rome.
