Joseph Green Butler graduated from Rayen School, Phillips Exeter Academy and Dartmouth College. He studied art with Ceylon Hollingsworth and Clyde Singer. He was a member of the Youngstown Water Color Society and an honorary member of the Mahoning Society of Artists. He served in the Army Air Forces as Captain and Major from 1942 to 1945. From 1935 (approximately) to his death in 1981, Joseph Green (Butler) was the director of the Butler Institute of American Art.
