Världskänd genom sina fotografier av kommunikationsleder och broar. 1953 deltog han i en utställning på Museum of Modern Art i New York, som en representant för den europeiska efterkrigsfotografin. Edvard Steichen, som byggde upp MOMA:s fotoavdelning, var en stor beundrare av Olsons fotografi och när museets permanenta fotoavdelning öppnade 1960 fick Olsons broar en huvudplats. 1969 avbildades hans brosviter på frimärken. Separatutställning 1989 i Moderna Museet.
