Louis Mathieu Verdilhan est un artiste français né en 1875 et décédé en 1928. Originaire de Marseille, il effectue un apprentissage en peinture en bâtiment. Il installe ensuite son propre atelier en 1895 avant de s’installer à Paris où il travaille chez un décorateur. En 1896, il retourne à Marseille. Dès 1902, il présente son travail lors d’expositions à Marseille puis dès 1906 à Paris. En 1909, il travaille à Versailles. Dès l’année suivante, il installe son atelier dans des entrepôts où travaillent notamment Giraud et Lombard. Mobilisé ensuite pendant la Première Guerre Mondiale, il côtoie notamment Albert Marquet et Antoine Bourdelle. Après la guerre, il habite le sud : Aix en Provence, Cassis puis Toulon. En 1919, il épouse la fille d’Alfred Casile, Hélène. Il rencontre un succès important avec ses expositions internationales. Il réalise un panneau pour l’Opéra de Marseille représentant la fête du 14 juillet. En 1928, il décède d’un cancer.
