Sigrid Granfelt var född och uppvuxen i Åbo. Efter studier i Paris, London, München och Dachau kom hon första gången till Åland sommaren 1902 för att måla. Hon återkom varje år fram t.o.m. år 1911, då hon köpte Husö gård på ön Bergö i Finström och flyttade dit. Där levde hon enligt självhushållningsprincipen och mycket av hennes tid gick till gården. Hon tillverkade själv bruksföremål av trä, keramik och smide. Detta gjorde att hon blev aktiv inom Martharörelsen för att utveckla den åländska hemslöjden och folkdräkten. Studie- och ungdomstidens tecknande och oljemåleri - hennes huvudintresse var djurmåleri, men hon verkade även som porträttmålare - kom hon aldrig mer att återuppta.
