Alexander Roos var autodidakt. Övergick från att vara yrkesmålare till att bli konstnär efter det att han kommit i kontakt med konstnärena kring Smedsuddskolonin. Han studerade vidare privat, samt vid studieresor till Frankrike, Italien och Tyskland. Arbetade som dekorationsmålare i kyrkor. Han har målat Stockholmsmotiv och landskap bl.a. från Roslagen.
