Emma Ekwall var syster till konstnären Knut Ekwall född 1838. Hon studerade vid Konstakademien och senare även i Tyskland. Hon målade porträtt och interiörmotiv från bl.a. barnkamrar. Det var främst för sina barnporträtt som hon blev uppskattad. På äldre dagar målade hon särskilt blomsterstilleben. Hon var verksam i Stockholm.
