Johan Stålbom var elev hos Johan Pasch och Lorens Pasch d.ä. och målade porträtt. Han slog sig ner i Östergötland, bodde en tid i Norrköping, men förvärvade senare egendomen Orräng i Grebo socken. Han gjorde sig främst känd som en skicklig leverantör av beställningsporträtt av präster, borgare och godsadel i Östergötland och angränsande trakter, företrädesvis i olja men någon gång också i miniatyr.
